The Faculty of Medicine - Background
Mbarara University of Science and Technology was founded in 1989 to respond to the increasing demand for health professionals in Uganda.
Undergraduate programs started in October 1989 with courses leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
A key aim of the Faculty is to provide better Community based Health care solutions, this is through the Community Based Medical Education (CBME) programme.
CBME aims at achieving a more effective implementation of primary health care; CBME produces professionals with appropriate skills and attitudes. Among others CBME aims at training professionals who:
• Are able to work in the communities
• Are acquainted with rural conditions
• Can serve the health needs of the society in which they work
To ensure that our goals are achieved, the University offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate programs and Diploma based courses, in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Laboratory Sciences.
Training:
Training includes basic science education, broad laboratory clinical abilities so that gradutes are adquately prepared to ably participate in community programs designed to promote health and develpment.
