Female gental mutilation: is it a sign of cultural richness or promotion of violence against women. Nakazbwe P
Abstract
This paper describes and discuses female genital mutilation (FGM) and the different forms it takes. It also provides an overview of the magnitude of FGM and sexual violence against women from selected casts, the various consequences such as health effects, social status and economic implications of the practice are discussed. The paper further looks at the factors that influence FGM, laying more emphasis on the relation between violence against women and the gender based social -cultural norms that exacerbate this violence. Specific cases have been cited and why such practices still exist in the 21st century has been probed. The paper suggests how a gender analysis may be useful to violence against humanity in general. It discusses some of the limitations of current responses and recommendations for policy formulation and action plans. Finally it looks at some dilemmas or areas of controversy and identifies areas for further work.
