Total protien and albumin estimation in the different stages of HIV infection
Abstract:
Akakimpa D. and Muwanguzi E
The Purpose of this study was to establish the behaviour of serum during the four stages of HIV infection. It determined the levels of serum total protien, albumin, globulin and the albumin/globulin ratio. The serum proteins were analyzed by a colorimetic method using the RANDOX kit. The study was descriptive, quantitative and cross sectional in nature, using a sample size of 40 participants. 67.5% had total protein levels higher than the normal range and 32.5% had normal serum protein. 32.5% had albumin levels at the upper limit.
The globulin portion was found to be mostly high 92% while the albumin to globulin ration was low and kept declining. It was observed that the levels of albumin and albumin-globulin ratio kept declining as the prognosis got worse. It was also generally observed that though the total protein decreased , the globulin portion kept on the high side. In conclusion, the levels of serum proteins can be related to the stage of infection and are of prognostic value. It is therefore recommended that serum protiens be assayed and followed up in the diagnosis and management of cases of immunosuppresion.
