Abstract
Foreign bodies (FB) constitute one of the most emergencies seen, especially in children. A retrospective study to determine the incidences of FB was performed at the Ear, Nose , Throat clinic in Mbarara University Teaching Hospital during the period from 2001-2003. Of the 7767 patients who attended that clinic, 637 patients (8.2%) had foreign bodies. Foreign bodies in the ears appeared commonest with 233 (36.5%). Majority of the patients were in the very vulnerable group of less than five years of age (49.2%). Special attention should be given to foreign bodies which appeared in the airway 87 patients constituting (13.6%) because they can cause death when complete obstruction of the airway occurs.
Key words: Foreign bodies, ear nose throat, airway.
