Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) Faculty of Development Studies and Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE) organized the first ever western public dialogue on the state of the nation
Addressing participants on Thursday 19th November 2009 at the Lake View Resort Hotel Mbarara, the Vice Chancellor Professor Frederick Kayanja said the dialogue was important because it forms a platform on which crucial issues concerning governance can be discussed. “This dialogue is a reflection on intellectual wisdom to discuss issues. Sweeping them under the carpet is dangerous.” He said
Professor Kayanja said, openness was the only key to finding lasting solutions to problems
Speaking at the same gathering, the Dean Faculty of Development Studies Dr. Pamela Mbabazi said the public dialogue was organized to explore ways of promoting national unity .Dr. Mbabazi said, that the outcome of the dialogue would make important contributions to policy makers.
ACODE’S Executive Director Godber Tumushabe said the dialogue would among other things also provide solutions in addressing the current contentious Buganda question in a manner that dignifies the rights of Uganda’s citizens as well as honor the country.
The public dialogue under the theme: “Resolving the Buganda Qusetion and Promoting National Unity: Creating a win- win Situation for Uganda attracted prominent speakers including Andrew Mwenda and Buganda’s Attorney General Apollo Makubuya.
The dialogue was attended by religious leaders, Private sector, Public sector, universities and the civil society.
