Professor Mugyenyi is currently the Executive Director of the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC). He was awarded a Doctor of Science (ScD) from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 2003; honoured Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2004; and fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh FRCP.Edin. in March 2005.
He is a renown scientific researcher on HIV/AIDS. He has provided leadership to the JCRC since 1992. JCRC has become an internationally recognized Scientific Centre of Excellence, providing leadership in AIDS care, treatment research and prevention thus making a major contribution to the Uganda AIDS Control programme. Prof. Mugyenyi pioneered HIV vaccine trials and treatment for the management of HIV/AIDS in the region. In December 2003, the Parliament of Uganda unanimously passed a motion to recognize and honour prof. Mugyenyi for his outstanding contribution to science especially in the area of HIV/AIDS research and treatment.
He has initiated and participated in several efforts geared towards the promotion of excellence in research among young African scientists and instilling in them a standard of best practices in the prevention, care and treatment of HIV such of which include the Africa Dialogue on AIDS (ADAC) and AIDS Care Research in Africa (ACRiA) all African lead initiatives that he chairs.
In addition, he has held important responsibilities in academic institutions as well as national and international organizations including Chair of the University Council and visiting Professor at the Faculty 0f Medicine, Mbarara University.
Professor Mugyenyi has published extensively with over 60 scientific papers and abstracts in national and international journals.
